Bus Travel in Bolivia
Bus service within Bolivia is cheap and there are usually many buses a day going to popular destinations. If you're travelling Bolivia on a budget, bus travel is for you.
All of the major cities and larger towns in Bolivia have some type of Bus terminal, from which buses depart and arrive. At the terminal you can find information about all of the bus routes and their destinations.
At the bus terminal you'll find a variety of private bus companies that have routes to all the major cities and larger towns in Bolivia.
Most of the buses seats recline and air-conditioning is standard, but you can't always count on it. Most routes are daytime only but there are a few night buses between far destinations.
Some long distance routes are served by more expensive but more comfortable overnight sleeper buses (bus-camas), which allows the seats to recline to a horizontal position. Many buses on long distance routes make stops for meals.
Because of the poor conditions of most roads, the length of the journey time can be unpredictable and you should be prepared for any delays. It can take anywhere from a few hours to over 24 hours, depending on the destination and condition of the road. A blanket and an iPod are great to have on these long journeys.
When traveling through the highland region of the Andean Mountains warm clothes or a blanket is essential because most buses won't have heat and temperatures do drop at night.
When buying bus tickets, some bus companies in Bolivia may not allow you to purchase a ticket days in advance only the day of travel. You should call in advance for pricing and route schedules.
Currently the only place to buy bus tickets is at the bus terminal. At this time you cannot buy bus tickets online or over the phone.
