Bus vs. Train

Hello! We are taking the bus from Santiago to Arica sometime in early August of this year. From what we understand there are two options from there - either the bus that takes the "Death Road"...or a weekly train into La Paz.

Does anyone have any experience with these routes? We aren't thrilled with the bus option, but we've heard sketchy things about the train not being very safe either...any suggestions or experiences would really be appreciated!!
