Plaza San Francisco in La Paz, Bolivia

Church of San Francisco (Iglesia de San Francisco) - Plaza in La Paz, Bolivia

At the upper end of El Prado is Plaza San Francisco. This is one of the most vibrant and liveliest plazas in La Paz, Bolivia

Here, you can see a great number of activities, such as many street-stalls and shoppers, shoe-shine boys in ski-masks, interesting street shows of people telling stories and magic tricks.

Though the busy traffic running alongside the plaza detracts from it, the Plaza San Francisco is the focal point for the city's Aymara population and you'll find many vibrant street markets near the plaza selling everything from handicraft items to electronics.

Also, on the plaza stands the Church of San Francisco (Iglesia de San Francisco), which combines Spanish and native building styles. It was originally constructed in 1549, but crumbled under a heavy snowfall. The church was than rebuilt between 1743 and 1753.

Next to the Iglesia de San Francisco is a museum where you can see exhibits of religious art and can take a tour of the church. The Museo San Francisco is open daily from 9am-6pm.

To the south of the Church of San Francisco is Calle Sagarnaga, which is the most popular street market for tourists, where you'll find a street dotted with shops and street stalls that sell many handicraft items and souvenirs. You can find items such as textiles, leather clothing, alpaca sweaters, panchos and many other items.
