"Things to Do & See in Coroico, Bolivia"

Probably the main attraction in Coroico is the road that leads to it, known as Death Road or World's Most Dangerous Road. Thousands of bikers from around the world come to "Death Road" each year for a ride of their life.

Once in Coroico many bikers just decide to relax after the thrills of the mountain bike journey at one of the pool-side hotels and have some cold drinks. Then most head back to La Paz by bus the next day.

What many travelers don't know is that there are also some nice hikes in the area where you could spend a few days in Coroico exploring the area. (See Below)

A good place to get tourist information in Coroico is the small office located on the north side of the plaza. Here at this small office you can find information on hotels, maps of the town and information on attractions in the area. There is also a tourist office at the new bus station.

World's Most Dangerous Road: This road connects La Paz to the Yungas in Coroico and you can take a mountain bike ride tour down this road. The road clings to the steep mountainsides of the Andes. It is an adventure that many travelers choose, though it is not for the faint-hearted.

Cerro Uchumachis: This is the small mountain summit that rises above the town and offers amazing views. It makes for an excellent hike and to reach the summit you must walk uphill beyond Hotel Esmeralda along the clear path marked by the crosses, that leads to the small chapel of El Calvario. Behind the chapel there is a path that goes up to the summit. It is about a 2 hour hike there and back.

Waterfall Hike: This is a 3-4 hour hike there and back where you can cool off at some refreshing waterfalls and spot some birds. The path is also located next to the small chapel of El Calvario. The path is located to your left as you face uphill, which brings you around the summit to the waterfalls.

Rio Coroico: Is the river that runs down in the valley below Coroico and is good river for some kayaking or rafting, which can be set up through a tour agency at Coroico's plaza.

Puente Mururata: Is a bridge over Rio Mururata in which if you walk upstream there are some cool, clear water swimming holes. From the other side of the bridge there is a path that leads to the village of Tocana.

Tocana: Visit Tocaña where you'll see the forgotten people of Bolivia and coca fields. Tocaña is a small village of Afro-Bolivians and is known for being the origin of the Saya music and dance. It is located about 23 km (14 miles) from Coroico. You can walk to Tocaña via a steep trail down from Coroico to the Puente Mururata. Then you hike up to the village of Tocaña or take a taxi from Coroico to reach this village.
